Criticisms of Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS):
- PAS is not in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM IV) or earlier versions.
- Dr Gardner’s work has never been published in a peer-reviewed journal and his books are self-published.
- Not a single study has confirmed that mental health professionals can reliably diagnose PAS.
- The Diagnostic criteria suggested by Dr Gardner are similar to those for his now widely discredited test for fabricating allegations of sexual abuse – the Sex Abuse Legitimacy Scale (SAL).
- The fundamental assumption at the heart of PAS – i.e. that children frequently lie about sexual abuse – is contradicted by all the major research in the area.
- The idea that false allegations of child sexual abuse, increase in custodial litigation has been contradicted by research conducted internationally.
- The PAS theory is blatantly sexist and targeted against mothers.

Parental Alienation fails to recognize that a parent or child may have legitimate reasons for having antipathy toward the other parent; it rejects out of hand the idea that allegations of abuse could be true. Thus, instead of investigating allegations of abuse, PAS turns the focus of the court’s investigation onto the motives of accuser. Evidence of animosity toward the other parent is regarded as evidence of PAS. As a result of this "through-the-looking-glass" thinking, when courts award visitation or custody to the parent the child has an aversion to, in many instances, the courts are awarding custody to abusers.
Some children placed in the custody of their abusers have committed suicide; others have run away, and countless others have endured the abuse and are permanently traumatized.. In recent years, children placed in custody of their abusers have been coming forward to tell their stories and to warn of the harms of PAS.

I. INTRODUCTION
The so-called "friendly parent" concept presents what seems to be a reasonable idea for the resolution of child custody disputes. 1 Children are thought to do better when allowed or encouraged to maintain a close relationship with both parents. 2 Therefore, custody should be awarded to the parent most likely to foster the child's relationship with the other parent, i.e., the "friendly parent." 3
The friendly parent concept is sometimes referred to as the friendly parent doctrine. 4 It is codified in child custody statutes requiring a court to consider as a factor for custody, which parent is more likely to allow "frequent and continuing contact" with the child and the other parent, or which parent is more likely to promote the child's contact or relationship with the other parent. 5
For example, Florida's child custody statute requires courts to consider two friendly parent provisions: which parent is "more likely to allow the child frequent and continuing contact with the nonresidential parent;" and "the willingness and ability of each parent to facilitate and encourage a close and continuing parent-child relationship between the child and the other parent." 6
As another example, Virginia's child custody statute also requires courts to consider two friendly parent provisions: "the propensity of each parent to actively support the child's contact and relationship with the other parent, including whether a parent has unreasonably denied the other parent access to or visitation with the child;" and "the relative willingness ...
